Surgical practices prior to the nineteenth century can be summed up with one word: Primitive. Without anesthesia, patients were subjected to excruciating operations. Procedures were so horrific that in 1750 anatomist John Hunter described surgery as “a humiliating spectacle of the futility of science.” When a rudimentary form of anesthesia was invented, most surgeons and patients still opted for hypnosis. -
