"We Need $26 Million, Not a Bonus" CEO Tells Employees after Giving Herself a Bonus

Andi Owen is the president and CEO of MillerKnoll, a "collective of dynamic brands that come together to design the world we live in." She made $1.1 million in 2022, as well $3.9 million in bonuses. But from the sound of it, MillerKnoll employees won't be seeing much of that.

In a company zoom call from an undisclosed date, Owen addressed the status of her employees' bonuses. "Spend your time and your effort thinking about the $26 million we need, and not thinking about what you’re going to do if you don’t get a bonus, alright?” she said. “Don’t ask about ‘What are we going to do if we don’t get a bonus?’ Get the d**n $26 million.” She went on to criticize her employees for even asking. "I had an old boss who said to me one time ‘You can visit Pity City, but you can’t live there,' so people, leave Pity City.”

Owen, who has "Poverty alleviation" listed as one of her goals on LinkedIn, and who's Instagram bio reads "Defender of equity and inclusion," also encouraged her employees to "lead by example" and "treat people well." Unsurprisingly, she faced instant backlash once the video was released on Twitter. "This filled me with an indescribable rage," one person stated. "And to smile through it all… what personality disorder is this?" someone else asked. Owen and MillerKnoll have disabled replies across most platforms, but that hasn't stopped plenty of people from commenting on one of her LinkedIn posts. "I wonder what her pompous facial expression will turn into when she hears the word union," one person asked.
